NCTech4Good History

NCTech4Good evolved over several years starting with a loose coalition of tech agencies — primarily Triangle United Way’s Teaming for Technology (T4T), RTPnet, NetCorps, TechEngage, and ExplorNet — called TechCoop, which had its first meeting August 29, 2003. NTEN and 501 Tech Clubs were discussed at that first meeting. RTPnet joined NTEN in October 2003. Kamira Jones (an RTPnet VISTA) and Shelly Bowers-Roghelia (a Triangle United Way VISTA) set up the Triangle 501 Tech Club for the group in August 2004.

The first meeting of the Triangle 501 Tech Club, a social, was September 9, 2004. About 25 people attended.

The next meetings were:

  • October 14, 2004, a social at a restaurant/bar in Durham
  • December 9, 2004, at George’s Garage in Durham on thin client computing
  • February 10, 2005, at Red Hat on Open Source Solutions for nonprofits
  • April 14, 2005, at Triangle United Way on blogs and podcasting
  • September 22, 2005, at SAS Institute on Data Mining
  • November 17, 2005 at Triangle United Way on Using Technology to Market Your Nonprofit

The meetings in 2004-2005 were coordinated by Damita Chambers and Vahid Nourani, RTPnet’s VISTAs. RTPnet did not continue to work with VISTAs and no one initiated more meetings until 2008.

In April 2008, Marjorie Fowler and Judy Hallman, who were working with NTEN and the Triangle 501 Tech Club, and Chris Limerick, who organized Triangle Net Tuesday supported by TechSoup, joined forces forming the Triangle Net Tuesday/501 Tech Club (www.meetup.com/TriangleNetTuesday).

Our group has become the Triangle Net Tuesday/501 Tech Club sponsored by RTPnet, NTEN, NetSquared and TechSoup, meeting on Wednesdays. In a special, lunch meeting, June 10 at Triangle United Way, the group was renamed NCTech4Good.
