Adventures in Story-Gathering

posted on March 18, 2017

We all have (and need) stories about the good our organizations are doing. But what does it take to collect authentic, powerful stories from “the field”? How do you make the most of your limited time on the ground? And how do you develop, pitch, and publish the story from there?
During this interactive session, we’ll talk about this and more:
Interviews: How to prepare for conversations with the people who benefit from your organization’s work, what types of questions lead to the most compelling answers, and how to establish trust so a subject will open up to you.
Photos: When to invest in a professional photographer, how to develop a shot list, creative ways to use (or not use) amateur photos, and tips for taking better photos with a mobile phone.
Case studies: We’ll offer examples from our own story-gathering adventures within challenging, resource-constrained circumstances. Discussion will include best practices, worst practices, and plenty of time for audience participation.

CyberSecurity for the Nonprofit Sector

posted on March 15, 2017

Are you a non-profit manager who lays awake at night worrying that your organization will be the next data-breach headline story on the 6 o’clock news? Do you worry that you or one of your associates will click on “the wrong thing” and your client’s data will be siphoned out of your database? Have you heard that charities are becoming a big target for hackers? Are you thinking about moving to “The Cloud” but have concerns about data safety? Would you like to know what to say to your Board about IT security? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the “CyberSecurity for the Non-Profit Sector” session is for you. In this session you will jump-start your security knowledge by receiving insight on topics that are fundamental to securing your organizational and client data. We will review case studies that show how real-world organizations have missed the mark in the area of cyber security and how your organization can get it right using some baseline best practices and solutions.

Engagement: Talk to Me

posted on March 15, 2017

Nonprofits are competing for the attention of their audience. Often your engaging content is too easily dismissed with the emails, social media feeds and other campaigns due to the sheer volume of content being presented. To keep your audience engaged start having conversations instead of simply creating a billboard marketing campaigns. Customer engagement is a process much like a conversation. You start by reaching your donors and volunteers and figure out how to sustainably engage them in an ongoing dialogue. We believe this is a new stage in the marketing maturity. Engage your donors and volunteers in conservations to foster a personal relationship and loyalty.

In this session, we will discuss how you can leverage technology to distill the noise for your audience and create the intentional conversations. We will discuss strategy around reach vs engagement and how that should affect your strategy for web vs mobile and the right way to use notifications and context.

Collaboration in Slack – Major Update to a 30 year Old Tool

posted on March 9, 2017

It is not often that one gets to summarize an update on a nearly 30 year old software tool! Slack is a very popular group collaboration tool which has its roots in the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) tool. Since relatively few IT pros under the age of 40 have much exposure to IRC, we’ll review Slack and make only occasional references to its IRC roots.

Features added: Slack App that runs on just about every platform you can think of. Integration with dozens of other apps and services. Enterprise security (paid level).

Quick history: Announced in 2013, Slack started as single web based group collaboration tool with easily configured “group meetings spaces” called Channels, all content searchable, integrated direct peer-to-peer messaging, and private groups (private Channels). The tool has grown rapidly in use, still maintaining a free single team with limited features compared to the paid subscription version. Slack made integration with tools and services a major feature and thus far has over 150 services integrated including Google Drive, Trello, Dropbox, IBM Bluemix, GitHub, and ZenDesk.

Demo screens: we will show as many samples of Slack features as we can, both from the web browser version and the App version (Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux supported) as well as open up a few Slack teams and show you how teams are using Slack today.

Note: Slack is free to use, and there is an nct4g.slack.com for you to try if you wish. It’s free and may engage you a whole lot more than e-mail + group lists + meetup sites!

7 Simple Secrets for Creating Stunning Slides

posted on March 9, 2017

When was the last time you looked at a presentation slide and thought, “What’s your point?”. Yesterday, right? And it might have even been your own slide (yikes!). Presentations have become our visual voice—the way we communicate visually. Yet, on a daily basis, we see slides that are laden with words, images, and data and we have no earthly clue what the slides are saying. Whether we’re presenting to our executive board, to potential funders, or to volunteers, our slides need to clearly, visually communicate to help our audience see our point. How can we create slides that clearly communicate our message without confusing our audience?

This session entwines a bit of brain science with easy-to-use secrets for designing presentation slides that help learners and audience members see your point. We’ll explore secrets and hacks for imagery, font and more. We’ll discuss, demonstrate, and apply the secrets to sample slides donated by the audience or even your own slides.

From National to Local: How Nonprofit Organizations Can Use Usability Tests to Amplify Their Local Presence

posted on March 7, 2017

As people continue to access more information on the Web, providing effective websites has become increasingly important to the work of Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs). While the needs of individual NPOs differ, working within industry standards certainly helps build a bridge between NPOs and users regardless of familiarity with the organization’s website. NPOs strive to communicate clear and consistent information to the “average user.” However, feedback is critical to improving the way a site functions. In order to assess the functionality of each website, I designed a series of A/B usability tests that ask users to find general information on the local chapter of 3 organizations (Girl Scouts, ACLU, & Youthbuild). I expect this study to reveal “pain-points” that users will typically face when trying to find general information for the first time. I argue that learning more about how users seek information will enable NPO’s to strategically manage and refine their online content.

Unconscious Bias in Technology Design

posted on March 7, 2017

User experience design is one approach to addressing the issues of unconscious bias often found in today’s technology. Unconscious bias is an often overlooked and undervalued aspect of UX design since the little details seem to be so minor to us, however these minor details can have large and lasting impacts. Designing a user experience without paying attention to unconscious biases is leaving out small changes that, in turn, alienate large demographics of people and shrink your client base. On the other hand, making these small changes could be just the kickstart your product needs to expand and catch on within other demographics. This presentation will detail how to identify and overcome unconscious bias in order to achieve the maximum client or consumer base possible.
